Get ready for any interview

Most interviews ask the same few questions. Prepare these once and you are ready for almost any job.

Free, always.

The day before

  • Read the job post again and the company's website. Find one thing you like about them.
  • Plan your route and leave time to arrive 10 minutes early. For video calls, test your camera and sound.
  • Prepare clothes one step smarter than the job, or the safety gear it needs.

"Tell me about yourself"

  • Two minutes, work only: what you do now, your best proof, and why this job.
  • Practise it out loud three times.

Questions about your experience: use problem, action, result

  • Problem: what was wrong. Action: what YOU did. Result: what changed, with a number if you can.
  • Prepare three stories: a problem you solved, a time you helped a customer or teammate, and a mistake you learned from.

Common questions

  • Why do you want this job? Give one real reason about the company or the work.
  • Why did you leave your last job? Stay positive and short.
  • What are your strengths? Pick two that match the post, with a quick example.
  • When can you start, and which shifts can you work? Be exact.
  • What pay are you looking for? Give a range based on the pay ranges for your field.

What to bring

  • Two printed copies of your resume.
  • Photo ID, certificates and licences for your field.
  • A pen and a short list of your questions.

Your questions for them

  • What does a normal day look like?
  • What does success look like in the first 90 days?
  • What are the next steps, and when will I hear back?

After the interview

  • Send a short thank-you email the same day.
  • If you hear nothing in a week, one polite follow-up is fine.
